QA Automation Salaries in Europe’s Startup Capital
The salary landscape for Quality Assurance in Berlin is sharply divided. While manual testing roles are increasingly paid modestly, Automation Engineers (SDETs) command excellent salaries due to their ability to accelerate release cycles while ensuring compliant, high-quality software.

- Junior QA Engineer (0-2 years): €40,000 - €55,000 per annum
- Mid-Level Automation QA (3-6 years): €60,000 - €85,000 per annum

Salary by Industry Sector
1. US Tech Giants (Amazon)
- Mid-Level Pay: €80,000 - €110,000 (Base + RSUs).
- The Profile: Extremely rigorous automated testing of massive global platforms. Heavy focus on custom testing frameworks, CI/CD integration, and performance testing.
2. FinTech Unicorns and E-commerce Scale-ups
- Mid-Level Pay: €70,000 - €95,000.
- The Profile: Web/Mobile Automation experts (Cypress/Appium) and API testing. High pressure to maintain zero-bug releases for millions of users. Excellent engineering culture and equity upside (VSOPs).
3. Early-Stage Startups and Digital Agencies
- Mid-Level Pay: €50,000 - €70,000.
- The Profile: Mixed manual and automation roles testing web portals and MVP products. Good stability but lower top-end pay. Great for transitioning from manual to automation.
The “SDET & Infrastructure” Premium
If you only know how to click through a UI and report bugs manually, your salary will cap out around €55,000. To push past €95,000, you must become an SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test). If you can build a custom testing framework from scratch in Java or TypeScript, write mock backend servers for testing, and integrate everything seamlessly into a Kubernetes CI/CD pipeline, you transition into a highly paid engineering role.
