The Merchant Navy is one of the most financially rewarding careers available, offering adventure, travel, and a highly competitive salary structure right from the start. However, the remuneration in this field is highly structured and depends entirely on a professional's rank, experience, and the type of vessel they are sailing on.
For those starting their journey in the deck department, the career typically begins as a Deck Cadet. During the training period, a Deck Cadet receives a stipend, which usually ranges from $300 to $800 (approximately ₹25,000 to ₹65,000) per month. Once the cadet clears the required competency exams, they are promoted to Third Officer, where the salary sees a massive jump, typically ranging from $1,500 to $3,000 (₹1.2 lakhs to ₹2.5 lakhs) per month.
As they accumulate sea time and pass subsequent exams, they move up to Second Officer and then Chief Officer. A Chief Officer, who is second in command of the vessel, can earn anywhere between $4,500 to $7,500 (₹3.7 lakhs to ₹6.2 lakhs) per month.
The pinnacle of a deck officer's career is becoming a Captain (or Master). The Captain bears the ultimate responsibility for the ship, its crew, and its cargo. Reflecting this immense responsibility, a Captain's salary is exceptionally high, often ranging from $8,000 to $15,000 (₹6.6 lakhs to ₹12.5 lakhs) per month, and sometimes even more on specialized vessels like LNG carriers or massive oil tankers.
One of the biggest financial advantages of a career in the Merchant Navy for Indian nationals is the tax benefit. If a seafarer spends more than 182 days outside India in a financial year, their income qualifies as Non-Resident Indian (NRI) income, making it completely tax-free in India. This substantially increases their effective take-home pay.
