The upGrad Admissions Counselor Interview Guide
Selling at upGrad is B2C (Business to Consumer), but the ticket size is massive (often ₹2L - ₹4L for executive MBAs or Data Science programs). You are speaking to adult professionals who want to pivot their careers.
The Interview Stages
upGrad looks for a consultative selling approach. You must sound mature, articulate, and capable of advising someone on their career.
Round 1: Empathy & Career Mapping
- Focus: How well do you understand the aspirations of working professionals?
- Question: "Why do you think a 5-year experienced manual software tester wants to buy a Data Science program?"
- Answer: "To escape career stagnation, secure higher pay, and future-proof their skills against automation."
Round 2: The ROI Pitch Role-Play
You will role-play with the interviewer.
- Scenario: "I am an IT professional earning ₹8 LPA. Pitch me a ₹3 Lakh Data Science diploma."
- The Approach: Do not push the features of the course. Push the outcome. Talk about upGrad's placement support, alumni network, and calculate the ROI. "A 50% hike post-course will recover your investment in just 8 months."
Round 3: Objection Handling
- "I don't have the time to study while working." -> "The program is designed for working professionals. It requires 10-12 hours on weekends. Short-term pain for long-term career gain."
- "It's too expensive." -> Immediately offer financing solutions (No-cost EMIs) and pivot back to the ROI argument.
Behavioral Focus
- "How do you handle a month where you are far behind your sales target?" They want to see a structured plan (increasing call volume, asking for referrals from existing customers) rather than panic.
