The Razorpay PM Interview Guide
Razorpay (based in Bangalore) is the darling of the Indian startup ecosystem. As a B2B FinTech giant, their product managers build tools for other businesses—payment gateways, payroll systems, and corporate banking. The interview process here heavily indexes on technical depth, API understanding, and B2B user empathy.
The Interview Stages
- Recruiter Screen: Basic alignment on salary, notice period, and past experience.
- Product Case Study: A take-home assignment or a live whiteboard session.
- Problem Solving & Execution Round: Deep dive into the case study.
- Technical & API Round: Crucial for Razorpay PMs.
- Values & Culture Round: Assessing fit with Razorpay's core values.
Round 1: B2B Product Sense
B2B product management is different from B2C. The user (the developer integrating the payment gateway) is often different from the buyer (the CFO).
- Question: "Design a dashboard for a subscription-based SaaS company to manage their recurring billing failures."
- Focus: Empathy for the merchant. How do you help them recover revenue without annoying their end customers?
Round 2: Technical Product Management
Razorpay PMs must be highly technical because their primary product is an API.
- Question: "How would you design the API rate-limiting structure for a new payment endpoint?"
- Expectation: You must know the difference between REST and GraphQL, what webhooks are, and how to read API documentation. You should understand HTTP status codes and how to communicate API errors clearly to developers.
Round 3: Root Cause Analysis & Metrics
- Question: "Checkout completion rate for merchants using Razorpay standard checkout dropped by 5%. How do you investigate?"
- Focus: Break it down by payment method (Cards vs. UPI vs. Netbanking), device (iOS vs. Android), or specific acquiring banks experiencing downtime.
Round 4: Execution and Go-To-Market (GTM)
- "You are launching a new feature that allows merchants to accept international payments. Walk me through the GTM strategy."
- Focus: B2B sales enablement. How do you train the sales team? How do you write the documentation? How do you manage the beta launch with select clients?
Final Advice: If you are interviewing at Razorpay, read their API documentation beforehand. It is considered some of the best in the world. Referencing their own documentation structure during the interview shows massive initiative.
