Cracking the Ogilvy Design Interview
Ogilvy is advertising royalty. Securing an Art Director or Visualizer role here is less about how well you use the Pen tool, and entirely about how your brain generates ideas.
The Interview Stages
- Portfolio Review (Screening): Your Behance link gets you in the door.
- Creative Director (CD) Interview: Deep dive into your portfolio.
- The Design Assignment: A conceptual test.
- Final Culture Fit: Assessing your resilience.
Round 1: The Portfolio Defense
The CD will point to a project in your portfolio and ask, "Why did you do this?"
- The Trap: Do not say "Because it looks good."
- The Solution: Explain the concept. "The brief was to make the bank look approachable to Gen-Z. I chose this specific rounded typeface to soften their corporate image, and used high-contrast colors to stand out on Instagram."
Round 2: The Assignment
You will usually be given 48 hours to complete a brief.
- Scenario: "Create a print ad for a waterproof mascara using only typography."
- The Approach: Ogilvy values wit. Don't just draw a mascara wand. Play with words that "run" or "smudge," but keep the ink perfect. It’s about the cleverness of the execution.
Round 3: Agency Culture Fit
Ad agency life is notoriously grueling.
- "How do you handle a client completely rejecting a design you spent a week on?" (Show zero ego. Explain that you divorce yourself from the art and focus on solving the client's business problem).
Pro Tip: Read David Ogilvy's "Confessions of an Advertising Man" before your interview. Quoting his philosophy on "Big Ideas" will instantly win over senior creative directors.
