Microsoft looks for empathy, enterprise architecture knowledge, and a deep understanding of hybrid environments.
Round 1: Hybrid Cloud & Identity
Azure dominates enterprise identity. You must know this flawlessly.
- Question: "A client has 10,000 employees using on-premise Windows Active Directory. How do you migrate them to Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) to use Office 365 and Azure VMs?"
- The Approach: Discuss Azure AD Connect, password hash synchronization vs. pass-through authentication, and conditional access policies.
Round 2: Migration Case Study
Enterprise migration is Microsoft's bread and butter.
- Scenario: "A bank wants to move their 15-year-old SQL Server databases to Azure. They cannot have more than 5 minutes of downtime."
- The Solution: Discuss the Azure Database Migration Service. Compare moving to Azure SQL Database (PaaS) vs. SQL Server on Azure VMs (IaaS). Address the networking (ExpressRoute) required to securely transfer terabytes of data.
Round 3: Cloud Native & Application Modernization
Microsoft isn't just about legacy servers.
- Question: "The client wants to rewrite their monolithic .NET application into microservices."
- The Expectation: You must be able to discuss Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Functions (Serverless), and API Management.
Round 4: The "Growth Mindset" / Behavioral Round
Microsoft's culture under Satya Nadella is strictly defined by the "Growth Mindset."
- "Tell me about a time a client deployment failed spectacularly. What did you learn?"
- Do not blame the client or other teams. Focus on what you learned and how you changed your process for the next deployment.
Pro Tip: Understand Microsoft's licensing model. In the enterprise world, technical elegance often loses to licensing costs. If you can explain the "Azure Hybrid Benefit" (bringing on-premise Windows Server licenses to Azure to save money), the interviewers will see you as a true enterprise architect.
