Cracking the Goldman Sachs Finance Interview
Goldman Sachs (GS) is the pinnacle of the banking world. The culture is intensely competitive and highly driven by excellence.
The Interview Stages
GS relies heavily on the "Superday" format, where you will face back-to-back interviews with VPs and Managing Directors for 4-5 hours.
Round 1: Flawless Accounting & Valuation
There is zero margin for error here.
- Question: "A company buys a piece of equipment for $100 using debt. Walk me through the 3 statements at Year 0 and Year 1."
- Question: "Would you rather have an extra $10 of Revenue or $10 of Cost Savings?" (Cost savings, because it drops straight to the bottom line without the COGS/OpEx associated with generating revenue).
Round 2: LBOs and Advanced Modeling
If you are interviewing for Private Equity or IB, you must know Leveraged Buyouts.
- Question: "Walk me through the mechanics of an LBO. What are the key levers to drive high IRR (Internal Rate of Return)?"
- Focus: Discuss paying down debt with cash flow, expanding multiples (buying low, selling high), and improving EBITDA margins.
Round 3: Market Sizing & Brainteasers
GS wants to see how you structure abstract problems.
- "Estimate the daily revenue of a Starbucks in Connaught Place, Delhi."
- Break it down out loud: Number of hours open -> Customers per hour (peak vs. off-peak) -> Average ticket size.
Round 4: The GS Culture & Behavioral
Goldman values extreme teamwork and extreme ownership.
- "Tell me about a time you worked with a difficult team member to achieve a goal."
- "Describe a time you failed. What did you learn?" (Do not give a fake weakness like "I work too hard." Give a real professional failure and the structural changes you made to fix it).
Pro Tip: Your resume must be flawless. If a GS interviewer finds a typo or a formatting error on your resume, they will question your ability to build a zero-defect financial model for a billion-dollar merger. Double-check everything.
