Cracking the Airtel Network Interview
Bharti Airtel runs one of the largest telecom networks in the world. Interviewing here means you are stepping away from standard corporate Wi-Fi and entering the world of massive Service Provider networks.
The Interview Stages
The interview will depend on your specific domain: IP Core, Radio Frequency (RF), or Optical Transmission.
Round 1: The IP/MPLS Core
If you are joining the IP network team, you must know Service Provider routing.
- Question: "Explain how MPLS L3 VPNs work. How are overlapping customer IP addresses kept separate?" (You must explain VRFs - Virtual Routing and Forwarding, and Route Distinguishers).
- Question: "What is BGP Route Reflector and why is it used in massive ISP networks?" (To solve the full-mesh requirement of iBGP).
Round 2: Telecom specific Architecture (4G/5G)
You need to understand how mobile data actually works.
- Question: "When you turn on your phone data, how does the packet travel to the internet?"
- The Approach: You must explain the path from the User Equipment (Phone) -> eNodeB (Tower) -> Mobile Backhaul -> EPC (Evolved Packet Core: SGW/PGW) -> Internet.
Round 3: Troubleshooting at Scale (NOC Scenarios)
Airtel’s NOC handles massive national outages.
- Scenario: "A fiber cut in Mumbai has taken down connectivity for 100,000 users. Walk me through the escalation and rerouting process."
- Focus: Discuss checking redundant paths (Ring topologies), verifying alarms in the NMS (Network Management System), and managing the MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) with the physical fiber teams.
Round 4: Managerial & Shift Work Fit
Telecom networks never sleep.
- "Are you comfortable working rotational night shifts and being on-call during weekends?" (For NOC and Core support roles, this is non-negotiable).
Pro Tip: Airtel is aggressively pushing towards SDN (Software Defined Networking) and NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) for their 5G rollout. Mentioning your knowledge of virtualized network functions (VNF) will highly impress the interview panel.
