NDA vs CDS: Defense Career Options After 12th
A career in the Indian Armed Forces is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious, honorable, and disciplined paths one can choose. For students aspiring to serve the nation as commissioned officers, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts two primary entry-level examinations: the National Defence Academy (NDA) exam and the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam. While both lead to officer ranks, they cater to candidates at different stages of their academic journey.
National Defence Academy (NDA)
The NDA exam is the premier route for students looking to join the armed forces immediately after completing their higher secondary education.
- Eligibility: Candidates must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years of age. They can apply while in their 12th standard or after passing. For the Army wing, any stream is acceptable, but for the Air Force and Naval wings, Physics and Mathematics are mandatory. Both male and female candidates are now eligible.
- Training: Selected candidates undergo a rigorous 3-year joint training program at the NDA in Pune, followed by 1 year of specialized training at the respective academies (IMA, AFA, or INA).
Combined Defence Services (CDS)
The CDS exam is designed for graduates who wish to join the armed forces. It serves as an excellent option for those who missed the NDA opportunity or decided on a defense career later.
- Eligibility: Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. The age limit varies from 19 to 25 years, depending on the academy applied for. Specific degree requirements apply for the Air Force and Naval academies (e.g., Engineering degree or B.Sc. with Physics and Math).
- Training: Successful candidates are sent directly to their respective academies—Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTA), Air Force Academy (AFA), or Indian Naval Academy (INA)—for training periods ranging from 49 weeks to 18 months.
