Landing a Product Manager Role in Kolkata
Breaking into Product Management (PM) in Kolkata requires a strategic approach. Because the city is dominated by service-based IT companies rather than product startups, traditional PM roles are rare but highly coveted.
1. Target Mid-Sized Product Companies
Look for companies building their own IP, rather than servicing clients.
- The Focus: EdTech companies, local FinTechs (like RS Software), and specialized ERP product companies.
- The Role: Associate Product Manager (APM) or Product Owner.
2. Transitioning from IT Services
Many PMs in Kolkata start as Business Analysts or QA Engineers in massive IT firms (TCS/Cognizant).
- The Strategy: If you are a Business Analyst writing requirement documents for a foreign client, start taking ownership of the roadmap. Ask the client "Why are we building this?" instead of just "How should it look?". Leverage this shift in mindset to interview for internal Product Owner roles.
3. Master Enterprise B2B Products
Kolkata doesn't have many B2C (Consumer) startups like Swiggy. The products built here are usually B2B (Business-to-Business) enterprise software.
- The Edge: You must understand complex B2B sales cycles, enterprise permissions, and how to build features that appeal to a CTO or HR Director, rather than a teenager on a mobile app.
4. Build a "Tear-Down" Portfolio
Since PM jobs are scarce, your resume must be flawless. Do not just send a CV. Write a 3-page "Product Teardown" of a local Kolkata app or a popular B2B tool, highlighting exactly what features you would add or remove to increase revenue. Send this directly to the founders on LinkedIn.
