How to Become an ESG Analyst in India: The Green Career Guide

ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) is the fastest-growing corporate sector in India. Learn what an ESG Analyst does and how to break into this field.

How to Become an ESG Analyst in India: The Green Career Guide

For decades, the only metric investors cared about was profit. In 2026, a new metric dictates global capital allocation: ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance).

Because of strict SEBI regulations (like the BRSR - Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report) and global investor demands, every major Indian corporation, bank, and consulting firm is desperately hiring ESG professionals.

If you want a corporate career that pays well but also creates positive impact, becoming an ESG Analyst is the perfect path.

What Does an ESG Analyst Do?

An ESG Analyst evaluates a company's sustainability practices and ethical impact. You are essentially auditing the company's "soul" alongside its balance sheet.

  • Environmental (E): Calculating the company's carbon footprint, water usage, and waste management.
  • Social (S): Analyzing labor practices, workplace safety, diversity and inclusion (DEI), and supply chain ethics (e.g., ensuring no child labor is used by suppliers).
  • Governance (G): Reviewing executive pay, board diversity, anti-corruption policies, and shareholder rights.

You gather this data, verify it, and compile massive sustainability reports that investors use to decide whether or not to fund the company.

Where Can You Work?

The demand is coming from three main areas:

  1. The Big 4 & Consulting: Deloitte, EY, PwC, and KPMG are building massive ESG consulting arms in India.
  2. Financial Institutions: Mutual funds and private equity firms (like HDFC AMC, BlackRock GCC) hire ESG analysts to screen companies before investing in them.
  3. Large Corporations: Companies like Tata, Reliance, and Infosys have dedicated internal ESG teams to ensure compliance with SEBI guidelines.

Salary Expectations in India

Because this is a relatively new field, demand outstrips supply, leading to inflated salaries for experienced professionals.

  • Fresher (0-2 Years): ₹5 - ₹8 LPA
  • Mid-Level Analyst (3-5 Years): ₹10 - ₹18 LPA
  • ESG Manager / Head (7+ Years): ₹25 - ₹45+ LPA

How to Break into the Field

You do not need a specific "ESG Degree" (because they barely exist). ESG teams are multidisciplinary.

  1. Educational Background:
    • Finance/Commerce grads are hired for ESG investing and reporting.
    • Engineering/Science grads are hired for carbon accounting and environmental impact assessments.
    • Law/Arts grads are hired for the 'Governance' and 'Social' compliance aspects.
  2. Certifications: To stand out, get certified. The CFA Institute's Certificate in ESG Investing is currently the global gold standard. The GARP Sustainability and Climate Risk (SCR) certificate is also highly valued.
  3. Learn the Frameworks: You must understand the alphabet soup of ESG frameworks. Familiarize yourself with SEBI's BRSR, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

ESG is not a trend; it is a permanent regulatory shift. Getting in early guarantees a fast-tracked career over the next decade.
