How to Become a Chartered Accountant (CA) in India

Complete guide to becoming a CA in India — CPT/CA Foundation, IPCC/Intermediate, Final exams, articleship, recommended study materials, coaching options, salary after qualification, and career paths.

Most Indian professionals do not lose momentum because they lack ambition. They lose it because the next step in how to become a chartered accountant (ca) in india feels vague, crowded, or risky. This guide turns that uncertainty into a practical plan you can act on this month. CA is not just an exam — it is a transformation. The 4-5 year journey teaches you discipline, analytical thinking, and professional ethics. The pass rate may be low at 5-15%, but thousands qualify every year. There is no reason you cannot be one of them.

1. The CA Course Structure

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) revised the course structure in recent years. Here is the current pathway:

Level 1: CA Foundation (4 months)

You are eligible after Class 12 from any stream, though Commerce is helpful. The subjects include Paper 1: Accounting for 100 marks, Paper 2: Business Laws and Business Correspondence for 100 marks, Paper 3: Business Mathematics and Logical Reasoning for 100 marks, and Paper 4: Business Economics and Business and Commercial Knowledge for 100 marks. You need 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate to pass. Exams are held in January, May, and September.

Level 2: CA Intermediate (8 months study)

You are eligible after passing Foundation, or graduates and postgraduates can enter directly. There are 8 papers divided into 2 groups. Group I includes Accounting, Corporate and Other Laws, Cost and Management Accounting, and Taxation. Group II includes Advanced Accounting, Auditing and Assurance, Enterprise Information Systems and Strategic Management, and Financial Management and Economics for Finance. You need to clear both groups separately with 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate per group. If you clear one group, you can keep its credit.

Level 3: CA Final (Variable)

You can take this during or after articleship. There are 8 papers in 2 groups. Group I includes Financial Reporting, Strategic Financial Management, Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics, and Corporate and Economic Laws. Group II includes Strategic Cost Management and Performance Evaluation, an Elective Paper (choose one), Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation, and Indirect Tax Laws. The passing rules are the same as Intermediate.

Articleship (3 years)

This involves practical training under a practicing CA or in industry. It starts after passing Group I of Intermediate. You must complete it before or after Final exams.

ICAI Study Material (Non-Negotiable)

ICAI's own modules are the primary source — 70-80% of exam questions come from these. Free PDFs are available on the ICAI website, and hard copies are available at ICAI offices.

Supplementary Books

For Accounting, use Principles and Practice of Accounting by P.C. Tulsian. For Taxation, use Direct Taxes by Vinod K. Singhania and Indirect Taxes in date-specific editions. For Auditing, use Auditing and Assurance by S. K. Basu or Aruna Jha. For Law, use Company Law by G. K. Kapoor and Business Laws by R. S. N. Pillai. For Financial Management, use Financial Management by Ravi Kishore.

Revision Resources

Use Practically compilations of past exam questions organized by subject. Use Scanner for previous year question banks. Reference toppers' notes available on various CA prep platforms.

3. Coaching vs Self-Study

CA Raj K Agrawal is excellent for Audit and Law. CA Bhanwar Borana is top-rated for Accounts. CA Parveen Jindal is good for Costing and FM. CA Murtaza Kachwala takes a practical approach for multiple subjects. CA Swapnil Patni is known for Tax and revisions. CA Nikunj Goel offers comprehensive coverage.

Offline Coaching

In Mumbai, Bhavik Choksi (SFI) and Pioneer (Pavan Kulkarni) are well-known. In Delhi, EDP classes and Unacademy offline centers are popular. In Pune, Pragati Classes and Jain Coaching are available. In Kolkata, Vidyasagar Coaching Center is an option. The cost ranges from INR 40,000-1,50,000 for a complete course.

Self-Study Strategy

Read the ICAI module thoroughly 2-3 times. Solve practical problems daily, especially for Accounts, Costing, and FM. Write mock tests under exam conditions. Join a test series for evaluation.

Best move: Take coaching for 2-3 difficult subjects rather than all 8. For the rest, ICAI modules with practice questions are sufficient.

4. Articleship: Making the Most of It

Your 3-year articleship is the most valuable part of CA training. Choose wisely.

Types of Articleship

In a practicing CA firm, small firms offer hands-on exposure and more responsibility while big firms like the Big 4 (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG) offer brand value, structured training, and good exit options. In industry or corporate articleship, you work in finance or accounts departments of companies. The pros are corporate exposure and a good stipend, but the experience can be broader but potentially less deep in audit.

How to Choose

If you want to build a practice, join a medium-sized CA firm with 10-20 partners for the best mix of learning and exposure. If you want a corporate career, pursue a Big 4 or industry articleship. If you want overseas opportunities, choose a Big 4 with international clients.

Stipend (2026)

Small firms pay INR 5,000-15,000 per month. Mid firms pay INR 15,000-30,000 per month. Big 4 firms pay INR 25,000-50,000 per month. Industry articleships pay INR 20,000-40,000 per month.

During Articleship

Continue studying for remaining groups. Maintain a daily diary of work done as required by ICAI. Learn practical skills like Tally, SAP FICO, Excel, and auditing software.

5. Salary After CA Qualification

By Career Path

In chartered accountancy, starting salary from articleship conversion is INR 7-12 LPA. With 3-5 years, it rises to INR 15-30 LPA. With 8+ years, it reaches INR 30-60 LPA. At the partner or director level, it exceeds INR 75 LPA.

At the Big 4 (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG), starting as an Associate pays INR 8-14 LPA. As a Senior with 2-4 years, you earn INR 14-25 LPA. As a Manager with 5-8 years, you earn INR 25-45 LPA. As a Senior Manager with 8+ years, you earn INR 45-80 LPA.

In corporate finance and treasury, starting salary is INR 10-18 LPA. With 5 years, it reaches INR 20-40 LPA. On the CFO track, you can earn INR 50 LPA to INR 2 crore.

In investment banking, which is a top exit option, starting salary is INR 15-25 LPA. With 3-5 years at a top bank, you earn INR 30-60 LPA. At the Vice President level and above, compensation ranges from INR 75 LPA to INR 1.5 crore.

In your own practice, starting income is variable and depends on location and network. An established practice after 5-10 years yields INR 20-50 LPA. With a good client base, the potential is unlimited.

6. Career Paths After CA

Audit & Assurance

This is the most common path for CAs. You work at audit firms, including Big 4 and domestic firms. Exit options include internal audit in corporates and finance controller roles.

Taxation

This covers direct tax (income tax, corporate tax), indirect tax (GST), and international taxation. Transfer pricing specialists are in high demand.

Financial Management

Corporate finance, treasury, and financial planning roles are ideal for CAs who enjoy business strategy.

Consulting

Management consulting firms like McKinsey, BCG, and Bain hire CAs. Risk consulting and financial advisory covering M&A, valuation, and due diligence are also options.

Entrepreneurship

You can start a CA practice, build a fintech or tax advisory business, or launch a startup in finance and tax technology, as many CAs have done successfully.

Overseas Opportunities

CA is recognized in multiple countries including the UK, Australia, Canada, UAE, and Singapore. Many CAs work in the Middle East, UK, and Australia at significantly higher salaries.

7. Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them

Challenge 1: Low Pass Rate

The Foundation pass rate is 40-50%, Intermediate is 20-30%, and Final is 10-20%. Focus on understanding over memorization, practice writing full answers, and appear for mock tests.

Challenge 2: Long Duration (4-5 years)

Most students take 5-6 years to clear all levels. Plan for 4 years mentally, but do not get discouraged if it takes longer. Many successful CAs took 6-7 years.

Challenge 3: Coaching Cost

If you add all coaching, registration, and exam fees, the total cost is INR 2-5 lakhs. ICAI self-study materials are sufficient. Take coaching only for subjects you find difficult.

Challenge 4: Articleship Stipend

The stipend during articleship is low at INR 5,000-30,000 per month. If you are in a metro, consider Big 4 or industry articleships that pay better, or stay with parents during articleship.

Final Thoughts

Becoming a CA is one of the toughest professional journeys in India. The failure rate is high, the duration is long, and the early years are financially tough. But here is what every qualified CA will tell you: it is worth it.

What makes successful CAs is consistent daily study — even 4-5 hours of focused study beats 12 hours of distracted effort. Practical question practice is essential because theory alone will not help you pass. Writing practice means writing full answers under time pressure. Group study helps because discussing concepts with peers aids retention. Health management is crucial because this is a long journey and you should not burn out in year one.

The CA tag opens doors throughout your life. It is not just a qualification — it is a badge of discipline and competence that stays with you forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a non-commerce student pursue CA? Yes. You need to clear CA Foundation first after Class 12. Many top CAs come from science and arts backgrounds.

How many attempts are normal for CA? Most successful CAs take 2-3 attempts per level. Taking an attempt is not a failure — it is part of the process.

Is CA better than MBA? They are different. CA is deeper in finance, audit, and tax. MBA is broader in management. The best career path is CA plus MBA, especially for CFO and leadership roles.

Can I do CA while working? Yes, though it is challenging. Many CA students work in accounting and finance roles during articleship and later attempts.
